In the last few years, Indian women are performing exceedingly well in the games that they play. They are not only representing India at the international level but also putting up the kind of show that makes us proud. They are associated with various sports like athletics, boxing, tennis, badminton etc. The legendary athlete PT Usha won many medals in her sports career. She was awarded the Arjuna Award and the Padma Shri. Mary Kom, a famous boxer from Manipur is the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each of the Seven World Championships. She won both the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan and also the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. Sania Mirza is another very popular name. She is a professional tennis player and the former world number 1 in the doubles category. Indian Government has recognised her talent and awarded her more than one civilian awards. Saina Nehwal, a professional badminton player has won over twenty four international titles and made India proud. The success of Indian sportswomen is not only restricted to athletics, boxing, tennis and badminton. The performance of the Indian Women’s Cricket team in the World Cup has also been praiseworthy.

Earlier sports was considered as the domain of men, but now the equation has changed completely. Sports in India has come up to be a gateway to women’s empowerment. Women athletes from India are no less than a powerhouse. They are the prized possessions of our country.
